SAFE ENTRANCE TO MAJOR NEW HOSPITAL
The demand for safe access to the new £261million PFI Queen’s Hospital in Romford has resulted in the installation of Gradus barrier matting systems at the main entrance and all public and staff access points throughout the hospital.
Gradus supplied and fitted Esplanade Plus and Access primary barrier matting, plus Boulevard 6000 secondary barrier carpet to ensure effective removal and retention of dirt and moisture from the high levels of wheeled and pedestrian traffic flowing through the 4,500 room, 950 bed and 20 ward hospital.
All products were specified in Nightfall to ensure a co-ordinated approach throughout the building.
In addition to barrier matting, Gradus has also supplied wall protection systems, flooring accessories and an attractive range of cubicle and curtain fabrics for the hospital, which is part of the Barking, Havering and Redbridge NHS Trust.
The new build Queen’s Hospital is the largest PFI hospital in the country and was delivered on time and on budget in just 39 months by Bovis Lend Lease, leading to the development winning the 2007 PFI/PPP Project of the Year Award at the Building Awards.
Gradus barrier matting systems can be used to help achieve an inclusive environment in line with the Disability Discrimination Act, as well as meeting the latest guidelines in The Building Regulations 2000 Approved Document M and BS7953:1999.
The Gradus Esplanade Plus system, manufactured using an aluminium base supported by rigid PVC-u bridging strips, was installed by Gradus in public areas subject to high volumes of pedestrian and wheeled traffic. The coarse dirt and moisture removal qualities combined with the low maintenance of the system make it ideal for heavy applications, such as Queen’s Hospital.
Installed at staff entrances where medium levels of foot and wheeled traffic are experienced, Gradus’ Access primary barrier matting is an easy-to-fit rubber based mat that can be co-ordinated with Boulevard 6000 and 5000 secondary barrier carpets.
