Gradus Lighting Makes West End Debut at Theatre Royal Haymarket

Lighting specialist Gradus has supplied and installed its step lighting in the main auditorium of the Theatre Royal Haymarket, one of the West End and Britain’s most significant theatres.

With seating capacity for 889, the Haymarket has proved incredibly popular with tourists and theatre lovers alike. The theatre sees large amounts of traffic daily and has previously shown much-coveted productions such as Waiting for Godot, Breakfast at Tiffany’s and Sweet Charity.

Gradus installed its Interlok Advance LED step lighting in Blue to create a pinpoint lighting effect on the auditorium’s stairs. This defines the edge of each step in order to help people using the theatre in low lighting to negotiate the steps safely and find their seats with ease. It also creates an aesthetically pleasing effect that complements the theatre’s splendid surroundings as well as reducing the risk of slips and trips on the stairs.

By utilising LED technology, the system offers an extra low voltage alternative to mains voltage lighting and is easy to install, which minimised disruption to the performance schedule.

The Interlok Advance lighting system was used with transparent PVC-u stair edgings, which provide a durable housing. The light projects through the transparent profile, ensuring the edge of the steps are visible when both ascending and descending the staircase, whilst providing an additional design feature.

The Haymarket’s Theatre Manager, Mark Stradling, said: “We felt that stair lighting in the auditorium was an absolute must and asked our architect to specify the best products to meet our needs. The entire project went incredibly smoothly and we are very happy with the finished result.”
