We teamed up with Groundwork UK for a second time to create a dementia-friendly garden at Age UK, Tameside.
The project transformed the centre’s tired outdoor area into a useable and attractive greenspace, underlining Gradus’s focus on enhancing the lives of those living with dementia through inclusive design.
The project at the Ashton-under-Lyne charity saw Gradus and other companies, including Tesco Bags of Help, donate money and volunteers to install an accessible and inclusive garden, featuring large planters and vibrant colours, that is now enabling its users to take part in meaningful and relaxing activities. The centre’s previous problems with access to the entrance, caused by a raised step, has also been solved by the installation of a drop kerb.
The work was carried out in close accordance with the Dementia Services Development Centre at Stirling University, whose Dementia Design Tool guided its decisions. It also built on Gradus’s previous work with Groundwork UK on a community project in West Gorton, which saw the companies work together to create an urban greenspace that brought together the community, charities, and local schools to transform a disused urban area into a communal focal point.
